Speaker 1:

State kicks in $1.7 million for Salisbury Beach project. After months of meetings and discussions on the state, local and federal levels, governor Maura Healey's administration announced Tuesday it will be committing $1.75 million to help combat ongoing erosion at Salisbury Beach. According to an article by Matt Petrie published Wednesday morning in the Newburyport Daily News that details the plan by the state, this interim, one-time sand dune nourishment project includes placing roughly 30,000 tons of sand along the dune between access points 5 and 11 and re-establishing a continuous dune. Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Brian Arrigo indicated that this is part of the Healy-Driscoll administration's ongoing efforts to kick-start a regional approach to coastal resilience and that DCR and the Office of Coastal Zone Management will work with the Salisbury community to develop a holistic strategy for addressing the impacts of climate change at Salisbury Beach. To develop a holistic strategy for addressing the impacts of climate change at Salisbury Beach. Due to the heavy recreational use of the beach in summer months and permitting requirements, beach nourishment is expected to begin in early to mid-September, prior to the onset of late fall and winter storms that typically cause the most severe beach erosion. The project is estimated to take two to three weeks Town environmental consultant Tom Hughes has warned that the northern part of the beach is in serious danger of massive overwash, which is the flow of water or sediment over a coastal dune or beach crest during storms.

Speaker 1:

According to the article, the current overwash elevation is 15 feet above sea level and until last fall all dunes exceeded that elevation. But now there is a 1,200-foot stretch of the northern beach that is in the 13 to 14-foot range. This replenishment is intended to be Phase 1, with Phase 2 planned to increase dune elevation to 19 feet and extend the dunes farther towards the water. The total cost for both phases would be about $6 million and it is hoped that the state will provide funding when the time comes. Check the show notes for a link to the Newburyport Daily News website and please support local journalism. That's our one and only story for this week, but that's okay. It's a big enough story to all of us that it can stand on its own. And that was the Shoreline Scoop.
