Speaker 1:

First up the shoreline scoop. Revisiting this story from last week state kicks in 1.7 million for Salisbury Beach Dune Project. According to an article by Matt Petrie in the Newburyport Daily News, after months of meetings and discussions on the state, local and federal levels, massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's administration recently announced that it will be committing the $1.75 million requested to help combat ongoing erosion at Salisbury Beach. This interim, one-time sand dune nourishment project includes placing roughly 30,000 tons of sand along the dunes between access points 5 through 11 and re-establishing a continuous dune. The current overwash elevation is 15 feet above sea level and until last fall all dunes exceeded that elevation, but after several rough storms there is an approximately 1,200 foot stretch of the northern beach that is in the 13 to 14 foot range. This replenishment is intended to be phase one, with phase two planned to eventually increase dune elevation to 19 feet and extend the dunes farther towards the water. The cost for both phases will be about six million dollars total and it is hoped that the state will provide funding for Phase 2 when the time comes. Due to the heavy recreational use of the beach in summer months and the permitting requirements, beach nourishment is expected to begin in early to mid-September, prior to the onset of late fall and winter storms that typically cause the most severe beach erosion. The project is estimated to take two to three weeks. Check the show notes for a link to the Newburyport Daily News website and please support local journalism. And that's our Shoreline Scoop for this week.
