First, up the Shoreline Scoop, repeating this story from earlier this month, since it's of vital importance to Salisbury Beach and plus, if you haven't heard it, it's new to you State kicks in $1.7 million for Salisbury Beach Dune Project.

Speaker 1:

According to an article by Matt Petri in the Newburyport Daily News, after months of meetings and discussions on the state, local and federal levels, massachusetts Governor Maura Healey's administration recently announced that it will be committing the $1.75 million requested to help combat ongoing erosion at Salisbury Beach. This interim, one-time sand dune nourishment project includes placing roughly 30,000 tons of sand along the dune between access points 5 and 11 and re-establishing a continuous dune. But state officials are warning stakeholders that the project is not a long-term solution and further future action will be needed to keep the dunes intact. According to the article, the current overwash elevation is 15 feet above sea level and until last fall all dunes exceeded that elevation. But after several rough storms there is a 1,200-foot stretch of the northern beach that is in the 13-14-foot range. This replenishment is intended to be Phase 1, with Phase 2 planned to eventually increase dune elevation to 19 feet and extend the dunes farther towards the water. The total cost for both phases would be about $6 million, and it is hoped that the state will provide funding for Phase 2 when the time comes. Due to the heavy recreational use of the beach in summer months and permitting requirements, beach nourishment is expected to begin in early to mid-September, prior to the onset of late fall and winter storms that typically cause the most severe beach erosion. The project is estimated to take two to three weeks. Check the show notes for a link to the story on the Newburyport Daily News website, and please support local journalism. And that's the Shoreline Scoop for this week.
