Speaker 1:

From the Summer Breeze studios at Salisbury Beach. It's the Salisbury Beach Broadcast, a weekly podcast bringing you the best of what's going on in and around Salisbury Beach. I'm your host, chris Torres, and I'm here to keep you updated on all the great things happening here at the beach every weekend, so you always know what's going on. Thanks for listening. This show was a bit of an experiment to see if a weekly podcast that lists everything going on at Salisbury Beach could work, and it seems like it does. Over the past 16 episodes, the podcast has over 1000 downloads, and that's with little to no real advertising beyond hanging up some flyers around the area and a few Facebook posts. So not too shabby. A huge thank you to everyone out there who supported us, and a special thanks to my beautiful and amazing wife, rosie, who is always my biggest supporter and has assisted me greatly in compiling a lot of what we bring you each week. It's been a huge help. This week's show episode 17, will be the last regular episode of the Salisbury Beach broadcast this season, but we're not going away completely. But we're not going away completely. While we won't be releasing a full show each week, we will continue releasing the beach band segment for a while and we're planning a monthly release for October and November to update everyone on all the great fall activities going on at Salisbury Beach. We'll probably take some time off during the darkest winter months before returning next spring for a whole new season of the show. We have big plans to make season two of the Salisbury Beach broadcast even better, so stay tuned for that.

Speaker 1:

If you're new to the show, our segments include the Shoreline Scoop for local news affecting the beach. Community Currents, where we spotlight special beach events, and Beach Bands, where I'll let you know about all the live music and entertainment happening here at Salisbury Beach. In our always at the beach segment, we'll let you know about those events at the beach that happen on a regular basis, along with other announcements that may be of special interest to anyone visiting Salisbury Beach for the very first time. Plus, we'll give you the weekend weather forecast in our Shorecast Forecast and surf conditions in the Tide Tracker Surf Report, with more segments to come in future episodes. Check the show notes or chapter markers for time codes if you want to jump to a specific part of the show, and each segment can be downloaded separately on our podcast feed and stick around until the end to find out how you can connect with us, share your feedback and help spread word about the show. Our goal is to be a comprehensive guide to everything that makes Salisbury Beach the place to be, whether you're a local resident or a visitor. The Salisbury Beach Broadcast is here to keep you in the loop on all the events, news and activities happening right here at the beach. I'm excited, as always, to bring you the highlights of Salisbury Beach, so let's get into it. First, up the Shoreline Scoop, where we bring you the latest news affecting Salisbury Beach.

Speaker 1:

Exciting developments may be on the horizon for Salisbury Beach, as discussions have begun regarding a potential artificial reef to help address ongoing beach erosion. According to a recent article by Matt Petrie in the Newburyport Daily News, the idea was first introduced during a Merrimack River Beach Alliance subcommittee meeting. Mit, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, has shown interest in the project. Selectman Chairman Michael Colburn shared that, while talks are still in their early stages, mit has begun working on climate change and coastal resiliency in Massachusetts and sees Salisbury Beach as a potential fit for their innovative work. Colburn mentioned that the MIT team is hoping to fortify coastlines with architected reefs sustainable offshore structures engineered to mimic the wave buffering effects of natural reefs, while also providing habitats for marine life. State Senator Bruce Tarr confirmed that MIT officials reached out to the MRBA to float the idea of this artificial reef, and it was indeed discussed at the last MRBA meeting. Tarr emphasized that this is part of a broader effort to find long-term solutions to the coastal erosion that go beyond temporary sand replenishment, tapping into cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. While it's still too early to determine where such a reef might be built or when the project might move forward, colburn expressed his excitement about MIT's interest. As a reminder, the state has also committed $1.75 million to a sand dune nourishment project at Salisbury Beach, which is set to begin in early to mid-September. This project is intended to provide some interim relief to the erosion problem but, as state officials have noted, it's not a long-term solution. We'll keep you updated as more details emerge about this potential partnership with MIT and the ongoing efforts to protect and preserve Salisbury Beach. For more information, be sure to check out the full article by Matt Petrie in the Newburyport Daily News, linked in the show notes. And please support local journalism. And that's the Shoreline Scoop scoop.
